When the 2021 season begins, Eric Moreno will enter his first season as the Pitching Coach for the Lamar Community College. Moreno is from Scottsbluff, Nebraska where he was a 3 sport standout at Scottsbluff High School. He lead the Bearcats to three-peat district championships in Football as well as Basketball in his three years, while also winning a state championship in his junior season. . Moreno also owns multiple baseball records for pitching in the Westco Zephyr legion program.
Coach Moreno played for the Runnin’ Lopes from 2013-2015. He was a key part of the starting rotation in both seasons at LCC. He threw over 130 innings combined in his two years in the program. Moreno registered 7 wins in each season. In his sophomore campaign, he was a tops the nation in ERA over the entire season. In his two years as a Lope, the team went 83-33 and 56-20 against the rest of the region.
After attending Lamar, Moreno furthered his education and baseball career at University of Nebraska-Omaha. UNO is a Division 1 program in the Summit League. He made the decision to stay close to home because his mother fell ill after her breast cancer. In his junior season, Moreno earned multiple mid-week starts though he was deemed the teams closer. He started games against Nebraska, Creighton, and Kansas state. In each outing he held those opponents to just one hit in three innings of work giving up no runs. He would go on to earn 8 saves that season along with multiple wins. The 2015-16 season was the most successful year the program has had at the D-1 level. They earned the #2 seed at the Summit League Championship after going 20-10 in league play. After a successful junior season, Moreno’s Senior campaign was cut short due to injury. After another knee surgery with a long recovery period, he decided it was time to hang it up. He finished his last year with a 4.0 and was named to the all-academic Summit league team. Moreno got his Bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies of Sociology.
After graduating from UNO, he moved to Greeley, Colorado to be the graduate assistant for the baseball program at the University of Northern Colorado. In his time there, Moreno got to learn the new technological side of the game. He worked strictly with the pitching staff and Nick Child’s, who is now in the Brewers organization, in his first year in the program. In his second year, Moreno was asked to take over the outfielders. After Child’s took the job with the Brewers days before the spring started, Moreno was back with the pitching staff. He was asked to run the pitching staff for spring along side with in Kyle Keith, a former pro baseball player. They were seeing many positives coming from their pitching staff until the season was cut short due to Covid. In his two years in the graduate program, Moreno secured a 4.0 GPA in each semester. His Masters degree is in Sports Coaching.
